Durrell (Wildlife Conservation Trust)

Gerald Durrell was a trailblazer in conservation, opening his zoo with the aim of closing it, as his primary motivation was captive breeding and re-introduction rather than a zoo as an exhibition.

He hoped that there would be no need for his zoo in the future.

He also funded his work by writing, at which he became very successful.

I can relate to his life as a boy, collecting and finding insects and birds, spending most waking hours outdoors. He was in Corfu, I was in Corsley – I didn’t matter, there was so much to discover.

His work lives on via the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, based on Jersey.
