21st August – 3rd September

A visit to Scotland, travelling up to Fort William on the Caledonian Sleeper train.

For our first few days, we were based at Oban from where we visited the Glasdrum Wood National Nature Reserve, Appin, Easdale (for the spectacular Corryvreckan Whirlpool), Lochgilphead, Tarbert, Campbeltown, Southend and the Mull of Kintyre.

Then, it was over to Coll to look for the Basking Sharks, which sadly proved unsuccessful due to the weather turning against us, even resulting in the ferries getting cancelled and our return journey being postponed.

Once back on the mainland, we travelled back to Fort William for a night’s stopover, followed by a drive to Mallaig and back, detouring to Loch Arkaig and the Allt Mhuic Nature Reserve on the way back.

We enjoyed the trip, but a shame about the weather.
