Field Notes From The Southern Red Sea June/July 2007

Our trip aboard the Sea Serpent liveaboard from Marsa Alam in southern Egypt was extremely worthwhile and enjoyable.

We visited the pristine areas of St. Johns, Fury Shoals and also Elphinstone.

Photographically it was also another step forward. Amanda was delighted to win the on-board image of the week contest with a very unique clownfish photograph, which can be seen in August’s “Image of the Month”.

Our progress was more in the areas of “small increments” – those little adjustments that make for a higher baseline average of image quality.

I spent most of the week using fish eye and refined my strobe positioning slightly, which I think made a positive difference to the end result. I also tried some new ideas for underlighting subjects which I think worked. The ability to concentrate allowed us to “raise the bar” and I’ve started shooting in RAW for the first time since going digital.

At Elphinstone, I braved the wrath of nesting Titan Triggerfish to get some very pleasing images of myself being attacked!

We also enjoyed the company of the group, which was good for learning from each other – JC.
