A biking weekend, taking in the Essex Coast, with a bit of Suffolk as well.
Great weather all weekend; the first night was at Thurrock, and the second night just outside Aldeburgh.
Not a flowing ride, but enjoyable – taking in many new places.
On the ride back west, I took in Lavenham and some other towns I’d not seen before – a good weekend’s riding.

An overnighter in London with Amanda, to see jazz guitarist Wayne Krantz perform at Ronnie Scott’s.
7th – 9th September
A visit to Penzance for one of Charles Hood’s Blue Shark trips. Sadly, the weather meant we didn’t go out.

A trip over to Jersey to dive Bouley Bay with locally based friend and underwater photographer Kirk Truscott.

A long awaited trip to the Sicilian island of Ustica, via Palermo.
Fabulous weather and a great experience in Ustica, with some of the best diving in the Mediterranean.
Really enjoyed diving with the Blue Diving Ustica team – really friendly and welcoming.
After Ustica, an overnight at the popular Mondello Beach, with a great scenic backdrop.

9th – 16th July
A long imagined “circuit of Ireland” motorcycle tour, starting and finishing in Rosslare.
Prior to catching the ferry across from Fishguard in West Wales, I “completed” what I called the “Bristol Channel Coast” – the remaining section I hadn’t had time to do back in June – from The Mumbles to Fishguard.
The circuit of Ireland was a long ride in “not many days” – Day 1; Rosslare to Kenmare, Day 2; Kenmare to Galway, Day 3; Galway to Rossnowlagh, Day 4; Rossnowlagh to Belfast, Day 5; Day off – Amanda and Zac had flown to Belfast and we visited the Giant’s Causeway; Day 6 Belfast to Carlingford, Day 7; Carlingford to Rosslare, then Fishguard to home.
Took in many great vistas and places, too numerous to mention, but especially memorable was the Healy Pass and the Burren.
22nd – 23rd June
A visit to Bournemouth to dive Bournemouth Pier. It turned out to a great couple of dives and the subject of a future feature for Scuba Diver Magazine – for the “Above 18 Metres” series.
15th – 17th June
A (rather ambitious) weekend to “ride the Bristol Channel coast” from The Mumbles to Land’s End.
On the 15th, it was a ride up to The Mumbles, near Swansea from where the ride would commence on the following morning. The aim of the day was to ride from the Mumbles to Clovelly in Devon taking in all the coast roads. A varied ride through areas both pleasant and much less so, and some new places such for me as Porthcawl, the Glamorgan Heritage Coast (a nice surprise), Barry, Clevedon (for lunch and rain shelter), Brean, the Porlock “tool road”, the Valley of the Rocks near Lynton and Clovelly itself.
On the 16th, it was more of the same, from Clovelly to Land’s End, taking in virgin territories such as Hartland Quay, Port Isaac, Polzeath and Portreath. I stopped for a extended break at Sennen Cove contemplating the ride back to home. Then the final push to Land’s End, and then heading home via Mousehole and Penzance.
It was 800 miles on mostly winding roads in les than 2.5 days. But I did it!

A visit to the Bristol Underwater Photography Group (BUPG) in Bristol, this time on two wheels.
26th May – 1st June
An overnighter in London, getting in a Ronnie Scott’s visit to see Nicola Conte and his band (enjoyed it).
On the evening of the 27th, we would head to Euston station to board the “Caledonian” sleeper train to Fort William in Scotland (great journey, fantastic to wake up to the scenery of the western highlands). From Fort William, we picked up a hire car to head over to Mull, staying in Tobermory at the excellent Lorne Cottage on the hill overlooking the town and bay.
Fabulous weather on Mull, as we travelled around the island. We had pre-booked a visit to see the White Tailed Eagle nest which was good (we saw them – at a distance).
The return leg was a drive back onto the mainland to Fort William, then through the Great Glen, past Loch Ness to Inverness to board the sleeper train back to London.
A great few days, and a chance for some photography.
18th – 19th May
An overnighter and a day’s diving at the secluded Kimmeridge Bay (a marine reserve area) with dive buddy Micah Newman. The conditions were favourable and calm. It would be the subject of a future Scuba Diver Magazine feature for the “Above 18 Metres” series.
4th – 6th May
A diving weekend in Swanage. Excellent conditions under the pier and the subject of an upcoming “Above 18 Metres” feature for Scuba Diver Magazine.
20th – 22nd April
A weekend in Bristol, with two shows in the avant garde realm. The first show, on the Friday was Evan Parker’s “Trance Map”, and on Saturday it was Moritz Von Oswald’s “avant-electronica” supported by Eric Cheneaux.
15th April

9th – 10th April
A rare chance to catch James Blood Ulmer at Ronnie Scotts – mixtures of free jazz and blues among other influences.
I went on two wheels – again in wet conditions. Route was Salisbury Plain, across the Pewsey Downs to Marlborough, then Hungerford and the M4 into London. Home route was the most direct – M3/A303.
29th March – 2nd April
– Setting off for an Easter weekend in York. Amanda and Zac would travel up on the train, and I’d go a day early on the motorcycle.
Had a long, somewhat dangerous ride in poor, wet conditions to reach Ely (with much relief). My route was along the northern fringe of Salisbury Plain, Berkshire and across the Chilterns.
The ride from Ely to York was in better weather (actually felt like spring), via Littleport, Downham Market, a stop in Kings Lynn, then skirting the Wash, Boston, and the coast road to Skegness. Then, across the Lincolnshire Wolds to Lincoln itself for another stop. Heading north then via Scunthorpe, Goole and then York.
We enjoyed York, had a good look around, visited the National Railway Museum, the York Minster and Clifford’s Tower among other things.
The route home (in grim wet and at times snowy weather) was via Selby, Worksop, the Sherwood Forest, Grantham, Melton Mowbray and west to Lutterworth, then picking up the Fosseway towards home.
26th – 27th March
Another London visit, this time to see Steve Gadd (legendary jazz drummer) perform with his band at Ronnie Scotts. This time, I was with an old friend Mark Hewitt, who grew up in the same Wiltshire village as me (Corsley).
The biking route was via Alton (to Bahnstormer) to sort out a worrying problem with the petrol cap refusing to open, then onto London via Guildford, into Battersea, over Westminster Bridge, along the Thames, onto the Strand and up Drury Lane.
Home route via the Strand, the Mall, through Belgravia and up to Marble Arch. Then the usual route (M3) to the A303 followed by a detour onto the A30 at Bullingdon Cross/A34 to Stockbridge, then taking the Andover road past the Mayfly pub. Back on the A303 to Countess then via Larkhill to Shrewton and Tilshead.
16th – 19th March
A long week of gigs. Friday in Bristol with Amanda seeing Arun Ghosh as part of the Bristol Jazz & Blues Festival (very uplifting gig full of positive energy).
On the Saturday, it was off on the bike in sub-zero temperatures and some snow across the South Downs to stay in Uckfield – the gig that evening was the Stickmen at Trading Boundaries (a new and interesting venue for me).
On the Sunday it was a ride into London via the Ashdown Forest, Edenbridge, Biggin Hill, Bromley, Lewisham and to Greenwich for lunch and copious tea. Then over Tower Brisdge, past the Tower of London and along to Covent Garden. The gig that evening was the stunning Scott Henderson.
Home route was a detour via Belgravia and then the quickest route back.
13th – 14th March
A train trip and overnighter in Durham. The reason was to attend court for a speeding offence picked up the previous September whilst on my motorcycle explorations of the North East. I received a hefty fine, but avoided a ban. The upside was the train journey’s and the stay in Durham.
24th – 25th February
An overnighter in Birmingham to take our son Zac to see one of his favourite bands (at that time!), Imagine Dragons.
13th February
A visit to the Bristol Underwater Photography Group (BUPG) at Patchway, North Bristol.
7th – 8th February
Another overnighter in London, this time to see the excellent Graviton led by Andrew McCormack at Ronnie Scotts.
A good chance also to catch up with old friend, Steve Larder who I’d not seen in a while.
Motorcycling route was A303/M3, then a slightly different route from there via Hampton, Kingston, Richmond, Hammersmith, Thames Bank, Earls Court, Chelsea, Pimlico (where’s Belgravia), Millbank (Tate Britain), Westminster, down Whitehall past Downing Street, Trafalgar Square, the Strand a new way (for me) to Drury Lane.
Home ride was out of London past Kempton Park, past the Thames house boats in the Hampton and Richmond areas.
1st – 2nd February
An overnighter in London, to see the experimental Norwegian jazz trumpeter and his band at Ronnie Scotts.
29th – 30th January
A convoluted ride into London, via Salisbury Plain, Salisbury, Stockbridge and Winchester. Then a stint on the A272 to Petersfield, then Bordon, Farnham, Guildford and into London past Chelsea, the former Battersea Power Station and Wandsworth, Millbank, Westminster and Covent Garden. Evening spent at Ronnie Scotts seeing jazz guitarist Larry Carlton with underwater photographer friend Chris McTernan.
Home via “north central” London, then Park Lane and via Knightsbridge to Hammersmith, then picking up the M4 to Reading and then Newbury, Hungerford, Marlborough, Devizes, Salisbury Plain to Tilshead and home.
27th – 28th January
A second consecutive weekend at Globe Cottage in Weymouth on the motorcycle. This time, I went via Bahnstormer in Alton for a bit of work on the machine, then headed off via Selborne, Liss, Petersfield, South Harting, Havant, along the A27/M27 to the New Forest taking in Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, Lymington and then Bournemouth, Sandbanks, Studland, Swanage and Lulworth.
More catch up on various items; trip planning, web content and so on. The ride back took in Dorchester, the “Giants Head”, Sherborne, Gillingham and Mere. Wet-ish roads, but enjoyable.
15th January
Scuba Diver Magazine publishes Jeremy’s feature on diving Studland Bay. Also, Amanda’s image of a blenny is used on the Grenada supplement.
12th – 14th January
A weekend at Globe Cottage in Weymouth on the motorcycle. A chance to catch up on various items, read, plan trips, write a bit of web content and so on. Took a different route home up the Piddle valley – Piddlehinton, Piddletrentide (great English names), Sturminster Newton and the back road to Shaftesbury.
